First asylum holding centres open in Germany under controversial plan

Germany's interior minister is pressing ahead with controversial plans to hold asylum seekers in centres until their right to stay is determined.

Many questions after German compromise on migrants at the border

the CDU and the CSU, reached a compromise about handling asylum seekers at the border. It still requires approval however from their coalition bedfellows, the centre-left SPD.

EU leaders seal migration deal after marathon talks

EU leaders clinch a migration deal during all-night talks that Italy's hardline new PM said meant his country was "no longer alone" in shouldering the responsibility for migrants.

Several European leaders including those of France, Germany, Italy and Austria will hold talks on Sunday on migration, an issue bringing bitter political divisions to a head in Europe and increasingly in the United States.
