Europe’s Schengen area: border free, with exceptions

French President Emmanuel Macron has called for reform of the Schengen system, which currently involves 26 countries: 22 EU countries, plus non-EU Norway, Switzerland, Iceland and Liechtenstein.

In 1984 France and Germany agreed to gradually dismantle their joint borders. In the same year Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands did the same.
