Berlin - More than half of the German population has used online banking in 2016. It marks an increase from six years ago, when the user rate was at around 43 per cent. In comparison to all European Union countries, Germany lies slightly above the average of 49 per cent.

Online banking is most frequently used in Northern Europe, and especially in Denmark where 88 per cent of 16- to 74-year-olds do their banking on the computer or by means of a smartphone. At the same time online banking remains uncommon in Romania and Bulgaria.

A comparison between the age groups shows that 25- to 34-year-olds do most of their banking online (66 per cent). The user rate decreases with age: on average, only one in four EU citizens aged between 65 to 74 uses online banking.
