Geneva - The European Commission has pledged 474 million euros (535 million dollars) in financial support to Afghanistan to support public sector reforms and address migration and displacement issues.

The funds are meant to boost public services, fight corruption, propel justice reform and support public health. The EU has earmarked 37 million euros in new aid to address migration challenges, including the reintegration of displaced Afghans.

Funds have also been earmarked to support the presidential and provincial council elections in 2019.

"The EU stands side by side with Afghanistan and its people to build a stronger future for the country," EU Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development Neven Mimica said Tuesday at the Geneva Conference on Afghanistan.

"Through joint efforts we intend to reduce aid-dependency and invest in democratic governance for the benefit all citizens of the country," Mimica said.
