Brussels - European Union countries on Thursday approved a set of retaliatory tariffs on US imports as the bloc moves ahead on its promise to respond to US steel and aluminium tariffs, EU sources told dpa.

Tariffs against €2.8bn worth of US imports

EU countries gave the green light to a list of products proposed by the European Commission to be hit with tariffs that includes US goods such as peanuts, orange juice, motorcycles and whiskey.

The list will now go back to the commission for approval, with the EU institution expected to finalize the process by the end of June.

The initial tariffs will hit US products that are worth up to 2.8 billion euros (3.26 billion dollars), the commission said.

The move follows a decision by US President Donald Trump to impose import duties of 25 per cent on steel and 10 per cent on aluminium products.
