Brussels  – EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom and US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross have agreed to meet next week, during a phone call about the steel and aluminium import tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump.

Malmstrom "reiterated that the European Union, as a close security ally of the US, expects to be fully excluded from these measures as a whole," a commission source said on condition of anonymity.

The commissioner also called on the United States to cooperate in addressing global overcapacities.

Contacts will continue "in the coming days," the source said. Further details on next week's meeting remain to be decided.
